“10 Principles That Can Make Your BJJ Journey Easier.”

Hello students, As your coach, I’m excited to guide you on this journey through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Whether you’re here to gain some self-defense skills, get fit, compete, or just try something new, BJJ has a lot to offer. Let’s talk about some basic principles that will help you get the most out of your training. I will go more in-depth for each principle in future blogs. The following principles are just my opinion and could vary depending on who you talk to.

  1. Focus on Technique Over Strength: In BJJ, technique beats strength. Even if you’re strong, learning the correct techniques will make you much more effective.
  2. Position Before Submission: Before you try to submit your opponent, make sure you have a good position. This will give you control and a better chance of success.
  3. Stay Relaxed: Stay calm and breathe. Being tense uses up your energy fast, so relax to move better and last longer.
  4. Tap Early, Tap Often: Tapping is essential for safety. If you’re caught in a submission, tap early to avoid injuries. It’s a part of learning.
  5. Be Attentive and Listen: Pay attention when techniques are being explained. The more you listen, the more you will understand and improve.
  6. Train Consistently: Like any skill, improvement comes with practice. Find a training schedule that works for you and stick with it.
  7. Practice Good Hygiene: Keep your uniform (gi) and gear clean, and maintain personal hygiene. This keeps everyone safe and healthy.
  8. Focus on Fundamentals: The basics are your best friend. Mastering them will make everything else easier as you progress.
  9. Be Open to Learning: Every class and sparring session is an opportunity to learn. Be open to feedback and willing to try new things.
  10. Respect Your Training Partners: We’re all here to learn together. Treating your partners with respect creates a positive environment for everyone.

As your coach, I see beginners embarking on their BJJ journey with excitement and curiosity. It’s important to remember that everyone feels a bit awkward at first—nobody masters BJJ overnight. By focusing on these principles, you’ll build a strong foundation that will support you throughout your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Remember, the mat is a place where you learn not just techniques, but also about patience, persistence, and respect. Every roll and class is a step towards becoming more skilled and confident. So go out there, have fun, and keep rolling!
