Hello, my name is Ray Casias and I am a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and have been since 1997. As someone who has dedicated a significant amount of my life to training this martial art, I have come to realize that there is a common oversight in many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies – the lack of focus on self-defense.

In today’s modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world, there has been a shift towards a more sport-driven approach. This means that the learning and practice of complex movestechniques, and strategies for competition have taken precedence over the practical application of self-defense skills. Which I am not mad about, as I am an avid competitor, but I do cringe when I see people not wanting to learn what moves will work on the mats and which moves could lead to you getting injured if trying them in a self-defense situation.

While the sport-driven aspect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has its appeal, it is crucial not to neglect the importance of street self-defense – the ability to defend oneself in real-life situations outside the mats. Unfortunately, the emphasis on sport sometimes leads to practitioners lacking the knowledge and readiness to protect themselves in potentially dangerous scenarios. As most schools do not have any other type of martial arts available at their academy. I am not sure about you, but I have never been in a street fight that had a ref, rules, or started with a simple slap-bump-and roll.

In the following sections of this article, we will explore why many individuals, including myself, have observed this gap between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a sport and its effectiveness in street self-defense. Complex moves and trickery may be effective in a competition setting, but they do not guarantee survival in a real altercation. Self-defense in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu goes beyond executing impressive moves; it involves practical techniques that focus on neutralizing threats, escaping dangerous situations, and ensuring personal safety.
